SPH Fund - Support the Internship Transition Phase

Each year, students pursuing domestic internships encounter funding gaps during the transition from their academic education to public health practice in the real world. During this phase, unforeseen expenses and extra costs can quickly get in the way of a successful summer of engaged learning. Common expenses include:

  • Transportation (airfare, gas, public transit, etc.)
  • Covering multiple rent costs (Ann Arbor and the internship's location)
  • Unexpected incidentals
  • Professional clothing

These costs are universal; they apply to students in each department, paid and unpaid interns, in Michigan and across the country. For many, it is daunting trying to perform at a high level not knowing how to pay for the internship experience. This is why we need your help today.

After accounting for paid/unpaid internships and requests for funding from the department, school, and university, Michigan Public Health students on average can face up to $2,000 of unmet need. For this year on Giving Blueday, your gift to the SPH Fund will directly support students asking for help to cover the gaps in their funding.

Every dollar raised on this day will support those running out of funding options for Summer 2020. Your support will ease the financial burden for many and will reduce the need for loans or additional jobs during the internship experience. Please give now and join us in our pursuit of a healthier, more equitable world.
