The Rick Riolo Memorial Fund

The Rick Riolo Memorial Fund (RRMF) honors Research Professor Rick Riolo, co-founder of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems (CSCS), who passed away in August 2018. Rick was a pioneer in the new science of complex adaptive systems and a respected mentor to graduate and undergraduate students. The author of more than 80 papers, Rick made substantial methodological and applied contributions to research on a wide range of topics including urban sprawl, HIV transmission, political coalitions, primary healthcare and food webs. The fund will benefit students in the Center for the Study of Complex Systems. Complex systems are composed of many interacting individuals, nodes, or parts that produce collective behaviors which exceed and even transcend the capabilities of the constituent parts. Examples include economies and ecosystems, political systems and social networks, the brain and the Internet. The Center brings together a broadly interdisciplinary group of faculty, students and researchers to study these systems.

Description

The Rick Riolo Memorial Fund will contribute to developing the next generation of complex systems scholars to carry on Rick’s legacy of groundbreaking innovative research.

What do gifts support?

The RRMF will support an annual agent-based modeling (ABM) prize awarded to undergraduates and provide research support for graduate students involved in complex systems.

Why are donations necessary?

Rick Riolo blazed the trail for a new frontier of science that provides revolutionary new tools to study our complex interconnected world. Your Giving Blueday gift will help launch the RRMF and keep Rick’s spirit of innovation alive for generations to come.
