Organizational Studies has always been blessed with a very active alumni base that is eager to mentor our current students in multiple capacities. Thanks to a generous gift from the Malkin family, our program has been fortunate to be able to offer our students a rare opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the daily lives of our alumni in their chosen occupations by shadowing them for a day. Since its inception in 2015, 55 OS students have taken part in shadowing experiences with 43 different hosts, receiving funding to cover their transportation and accommodation costs. This experience helped students to define more concretely their future career goals. For some students, the experience led to internships and full-time employment at their hosting organization. In the words of one recent participant, “This experience impacted my job search in that I realized that I do want to work in a human-centric and customer-facing role within a technology company.” For the 2019-20 academic year, we had a record-breaking number of applicants. The support we provide to our 2019-20 shadowing cohort will most likely deplete the shadowing opportunity gift funds we have.
Organizational Studies is eager to continue this shadowing opportunity and hopes to raise funds that will ensure that our students can continue to benefit from a peek behind the curtain in their potential career fields, guided by the alumni who understand the power and promise of an OS education.
